UK Street Soul

UK Street Soul

UK street soul is a British form of contemporary R&B that emerged in the mid-1980s, fusing American soul and boogie with Jamaican sound-system practice, hip hop breakbeats and drum-machine programming. Acts such as *Loose Ends*, *Soul II Soul* and *52nd Street* combined heavy sub-bass, raw 808 patterns and unpolished home-studio production with melodic group singing, producing a sound distinct from the smoother American R&B of the period. Developed through pirate radio, blues parties and independent labels, it formed a specifically Black British urban music before feeding into jungle, UK garage and later British R&B.
