UK Techno

UK techno is the British strain of techno that formed in the late 1980s when producers in Sheffield, Leeds and London answered Detroit's machine funk with colder, bass-heavy and more melodic variants. Its first wave, the bleep sound of *LFO* and *Nightmares on Wax* on #Warp#, gave way to the listening-oriented electronica of *The Black Dog*, *B12* and *Autechre*, while a harder Birmingham line ran through *Surgeon* and *Regis*. The term now covers both that heritage and a continuing national lineage of producers filtering American templates through British club culture, pirate radio and sound-system weight.
