Visual Kei

Visual Kei

Visual kei is a Japanese rock movement in which flamboyant visual presentation — elaborate costumes, styled hair, theatrical make-up and androgynous imagery — is integral to the music's identity. Emerging in the 1980s around *X Japan*, *Buck-Tick* and *Luna Sea*, it is an umbrella rather than a single sound, spanning heavy metal, gothic rock, punk and synth-pop and unified by spectacle and an independent-label economy. Bands cultivate distinct visual concepts that change between releases, and fan culture centres on the complete aesthetic package. The term, drawn from *X Japan*'s slogan 'visual shock', marks appearance as a compositional element equal to the songs themselves.
