Western Ballad

Western Ballad

The Western Ballad is the narrative song tradition of the American frontier, encompassing 19th-century cowboy songs and the composed gunfighter ballads of the recording era. Sung in plain, story-first language, its tales follow cowboys, outlaws, lawmen, railroads and lost loves across an idealized West. Early collectors preserved songs such as "The Old Chisholm Trail" from working cowhands; radio and records then fixed the form through *Marty Robbins*, whose "El Paso" made the gunfighter ballad a pop standard. The tradition remains the storytelling bedrock of western music.
