White Voice

White Voice

White voice, bia艂e g艂os in Polish and bialy glos across the Slavic world, is a traditional folk singing technique of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, and by extension the body of recorded music performed in it. It is produced with an open throat and high laryngeal position, yielding a bright, piercing, straight tone with little or no vibrato, designed to carry outdoors and over instruments. Practised by village singers in Bulgaria, Poland, Ukraine, Serbia and Croatia, typically in women's ensembles, it underlies repertoires of ritual, wedding and harvest songs, and has been carried worldwide by state folk choirs and revival groups since the 1970s.
