Winter Synth

Winter Synth

Winter synth is a form of ambient electronic music, closely related to dungeon synth, devoted to the depiction of winter: cold, empty landscapes, snowfall and long northern nights. Its recordings favor slow, repetitive synthesizer melodies, lo-fi production, field recordings of wind and sparse piano, with little or no percussion. The style coalesced in the late 1990s in the ambient works of the Swiss project *Paysage d'Hiver*, whose "Die Festung" (1998) is an early document, and the Finnish project *Jääportit*; *Vinterriket*, *Jötgrimm* and *Northaunt* extended it within the black metal underground.
