Witch House

Witch House

Witch house is an electronic microgenre that emerged in the late 2000s, fusing the slowed, pitched-down vocal chopping of Houston's chopped and screwed hip hop with darkwave, industrial and shoegaze textures. Its sound is defined by cavernous reverb, dragging tempos, occult and horror imagery, and song titles and artist names frequently rendered in unicode symbols and crosses. Acts such as *SALEM*, who established the genre's template, *oOoOO*, *Balam Acab* and *White Ring* built the style through blogs and small online labels, pairing lo-fi, disorienting production with imagery drawn from witchcraft, seances and VHS horror. Though short-lived as a scene, it shaped later internet-born dark electronic styles.
