Wong shadow

Wong shadow

Wong shadow, or shadow music, is a Thai popular music style of the early 1960s in which local bands adapted the instrumental guitar sound of *Cliff Richard & The Shadows* and *The Ventures* to Thai melodies. Developed by groups such as *Johnny Guitar*, *P.M. Pocket Music* and *Khabuan Mukda*, it combined echo-laden lead guitar, organ and dance-band line-ups with American rhythm and blues, surf rock, exotica and film music. Marketed at the time as 'Thai modernised music', wong shadow was short-lived but foundational, feeding directly into Thai pop and Thai rock.
