Wonky Techno

Wonky Techno

Wonky techno is an informal label for the playful, off-kilter strain of British techno that emerged in the mid-1990s around producers such as *Cristian Vogel*, *Neil Landstrumm*, *Tobias Schmidt* and *Si Begg*. Against the austerity of minimal and Detroit-derived techno, it favours lurching, funk-influenced grooves, abrupt structural swerves, comic or abrasive sound design, hip-hop and electro borrowings, and tracks that seem to stumble without ever losing the beat. Centred on Brighton and on labels such as #Mosquito#, #Tresor# and #Peacefrog#, wonky techno treats the dancefloor seriously while refusing solemnity in its materials and titles.
