Xian Psych

Xian Psych

Emerging from the nexus of the late 1960s American counter-culture and the Jesus Movement, Xian Psych rock repurposed the sonic vocabulary of psychedelia to explore Christian theological and biblical themes. The genre is defined by a textural blend of distorted, effects-laden guitars, prominent organ, and folk-rooted instrumentation, creating a surreal and often transcendent atmosphere. Lyrically, it moved beyond simple praise, engaging in allegory and social commentary through a spiritual lens. It primarily developed outside mainstream commercial channels, circulated through private pressings and small religious labels, and its influence remained largely subterranean until its rediscovery by collectors and music archivists.
