Yass

Yass is a Polish avant-garde jazz style that emerged in the late 1980s around the Tricity of Gda艅sk, Gdynia and Sopot and the city of Bydgoszcz. Coined as a deliberate provocation against the established jazz establishment, the term covered musicians who mixed free jazz and improvisation with punk rock energy, folk material, cabaret and deliberate amateurism, rejecting both mainstream jazz polish and commercial pop. Centred on clubs such as M贸zg in Bydgoszcz and groups including *Mi艂o艣膰*, *艁oskot* and *Trytony*, yass functioned as much as a scene and an attitude as a sound, and it reshaped Polish improvised music in the 1990s.
