Yiddish Folksong

Yiddish Folksong

Yiddish folksong is the traditional sung repertoire of Ashkenazi Jewish communities in Eastern Europe and the diaspora, encompassing love songs, lullabies, work songs, wedding music and laments carried across generations in the Yiddish language. Field collectors such as *Ruth Rubin* documented elderly immigrants' repertoires for #Folkways#, while *Theodore Bikel* and *Martha Schlamme* brought the songs to concert audiences on LPs like "Sings Jewish Folk Songs". The revival later fused the repertoire with the klezmer resurgence through acts like *The Klezmatics*, keeping a threatened vernacular songbook in active performance.
