Zarzuela

Zarzuela is the Spanish lyric theatre genre that alternates sung numbers with spoken dialogue, encompassing the grand two- and three-act zarzuela grande and the short g茅nero chico. Born at the royal hunting lodge of La Zarzuela in the seventeenth century, it matured in the nineteenth into Spain's national musical theatre, blending Italianate aria and chorus, Spanish dance rhythms and popular song to tell stories of Madrid barrios, regional customs and historical romance, with a parallel tradition in Cuba and the Philippines.
