Originally released as an independent 12-inch, 'Loser' became a surprise smash hit that forced major label Geffen into a swift global reissue. The track is built on a looped slide guitar sample from Johnny Jenkins paired with Dr. John drum breaks and Beck's stream-of-consciousness rapping. Its self-deprecating chorus inadvertently became the defining slacker anthem for Generation X alternative culture.
