Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl / Safety Mama

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded near the end of her career during the depths of the Depression, the 'Empress of the Blues' delivers a masterful, deeply suggestive performance. The A-side relies on thinly veiled, humorous double entendres supported by rolling, sophisticated piano accompaniment. Despite shifting commercial tastes, the vocal power and commanding presence demonstrated here remain completely undiminished.
