Propelled by an overwhelmingly heavy, distorted synth-bass line and abrasive trip-hop drum loop, 'Army of Me' serves as a startlingly aggressive departure from the artist's prior solo work. The lyrics were reportedly inspired by a desire to confront her brother's self-destructive behavior, demanding self-sufficiency and resilience. Co-written with Graham Massey of 808 State, the track successfully integrated harsh industrial aesthetics into avant-garde pop.
