The Universal

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Showcasing Damon Albarn's growing ambition, 'The Universal' eschews standard rock instrumentation in favor of a sweeping, deeply melancholic orchestral arrangement. The lyrics present a cynical, dystopian vision of a future numbed by antidepressants and synthetic happiness, heavily referencing Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'. Despite its deeply cynical undertones, the track's massive, triumphant chorus made it a staple of the Britpop era.
