Added to 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust...' late in the recording process at the behest of label executives, 'Starman' formally introduced Bowie's messianic alien alter-ego to the mainstream. His vibrant, sexually ambiguous performance of the song on 'Top of the Pops' fundamentally altered British youth culture and the trajectory of 1970s glam rock. The chorus notably utilizes a dramatic octave jump melody directly inspired by 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'.
