Runaway / Jody

by Del Shannon

Runaway / Jody cover art

A revolutionary hit that introduced a moodier, darker edge to early 1960s pop-rock. Del Shannon's soaring falsetto perfectly articulates teenage heartbreak, but the song is most famous for its instrumental bridge. Keyboardist Max Crook performed the iconic, alien-sounding solo on a self-invented, heavily modified clavioline he dubbed the 'Musitron', effectively introducing early synthesizer textures to mainstream rock and roll.
