Album Notes & Community Reviews
A single from 'Black on Both Sides', 'Umi Says' is Mos Def's prayer-like address to his mother ('umi' in Arabic), sung as much as rapped over a live band arrangement he produced. Its jazz and soul instrumentation set it apart from the album's boom bap core.
