Album Notes & Community Reviews

Produced by Pete Rock rather than DJ Premier, this track provides a moment of soulful, jazzy optimism amidst the grim reality of 'Illmatic'. The Ahmad Jamal piano sample underscores complex, internal rhymes concerning legacy, existential pressure, and urban survival. The iconic chorus hook later provided the foundation for Jay-Z's highly successful 'Dead Presidents II', indirectly sparking one of hip-hop's greatest feuds.
