Bridging a tragic transition, both tracks on this single were originally written by Joy Division prior to Ian Curtis's death. 'Ceremony' was reworked by the surviving members as their debut under a new moniker, featuring Bernard Sumner stepping into the role of reluctant lead vocalist. The bright, propulsive guitar work contrasted sharply with the devastating lyrical undertones, setting the template for the band's initial era.
