Album Notes & Community Reviews
Utilizing a loud-quiet-loud dynamic template borrowed from the Pixies, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' unintentionally catalyzed the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s. Kurt Cobain's cryptic, sarcastic lyrics resonated deeply with Generation X disillusionment, while Butch Vig's polished yet heavy production brought underground grit to MTV. The song effectively ended the dominance of hair metal and irrevocably shifted the mainstream musical landscape.
