Driven by Matthew Fisher's majestic Hammond organ melody, which heavily interpolates J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3, 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' is a cornerstone of the Summer of Love. Keith Reid's surreal, cryptic lyrics evoke classical literature and drunken maritime disaster, sung with soulful intensity by Gary Brooker. It established an early template for the emerging symphonic and progressive rock movements.
