Born from immense frustration during the recording sessions for 'The Bends', Thom Yorke famously broke down in tears after recording the final vocal take. The acoustic-driven ballad critiques the artificiality of consumer culture and the inauthenticity of modern suburban life, slowly building toward a cathartic, sweeping rock crescendo. It signaled Radiohead's departure from grunge-adjacent angst into deeper, more orchestrated emotional vulnerability.
