Functioning as the most traditional, guitar-driven track on the famously electronic 'Kid A', 'Optimistic' is propelled by a driving, krautrock-inspired rhythm and interlocking, cyclical guitar riffs. Despite its seemingly encouraging title and chorus, the lyrical content heavily implies a sarcastic critique of consumerism and survival-of-the-fittest capitalism. It was released exclusively as a promotional radio single to ease the public transition into the band's radical new sound.
