Conceived as a 'pocket symphony', Brian Wilson spent unprecedented time and budget assembling 'Good Vibrations' from disparate modular tape sections recorded across several studios. The track introduces unusual instrumentation to pop radio, notably the eerie oscillation of the Electro-Theremin, alongside heavy fuzz bass and layered cellos. It pushed studio recording into modern avant-garde territory while remaining a massive commercial triumph.
