Originally written by John and Michelle Phillips during a bitterly cold winter in New York City, this track became the defining anthem of the emerging 1960s California counterculture. Featuring a brief but evocative alto flute solo by jazz musician Bud Shank, the arrangement relies on the group's immaculate four-part vocal harmonies to convey a deep sense of wistful nostalgia. It served as the catalyst for the folk-pop movement transitioning into the Summer of Love.
