Album Notes & Community Reviews

Propelled by Johnny Marr's dazzling, Afrobeat-influenced high-life guitar picking, 'This Charming Man' firmly established the jangly sonic template of 1980s British indie music. Morrissey's lyrics blend literary Oscar Wilde romanticism with working-class drabness and subtle homoerotic tension. The bouncing rhythm and wistful melancholy perfectly encapsulated the band's outsider appeal.
