Composed and engineered by eccentric, visionary producer Joe Meek to celebrate the launch of the Telstar communications satellite. The entirely instrumental track features a swooping, futuristic melody played on a clavioline, heavily treated with Meek's signature over-compressed tape delays and echo effects. It became the very first song by a British group to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, preceding the Beatles' invasion.
