Arriving after an enormous fourteen-year hiatus, the alternative rock supergroup led by Maynard James Keenan and Billy Howerdel returned with a surprisingly restrained, deeply melancholic record. The album largely abandons heavy metal riffing in favor of somber piano arrangements and moody art-rock textures. Thematically, it delivers an incredibly cynical, politically charged critique of modern society and political disillusionment.
