On 'Merriweather Post Pavilion', Animal Collective largely abandoned guitars for a dense, sample-heavy electronic soundscape built from Roland samplers, analog synthesizers, and deep layers of reverb and vocal harmony. The trio, working with co-producer Ben H. Allen, channeled this intricate and buoyant production to explore lyrical themes of burgeoning domestic life, partnership, and the anxieties of providing for family. This fusion of experimental sound design with anthemic, accessible pop songwriting made the album one of the most critically acclaimed and influential works of its time, defining a key moment in neo-psychedelia.
