Attempting to follow the colossal success of their debut, the progressive rock supergroup tightened their focus on radio-friendly arena rock hooks. The resulting album largely eschews complex instrumental interplay in favor of polished power ballads and massive, synthesizer-heavy choruses like 'Don't Cry'. The overtly commercial direction alienated some of the band's progressive fanbase and led to internal strife, particularly between John Wetton and Steve Howe.
