Originally recorded in 1989 as a sprawling concept album, Quorthon initially shelved the project, fearing its epic heavy metal style was too drastic a departure from extreme black metal. Following overwhelming fan demand, the tapes were restored and polished for release nearly a decade later. The grand, mythological narrative solidified the foundational aesthetics and thematic scope of the viking metal subgenre.
