On 'Aethiopes', billy woods joins producer Preservation, who constructs an atmospheric and often unsettling soundscape from a wide-ranging palette of obscure samples drawn from African and Middle Eastern music. The production's intricate, sometimes drumless arrangements and disorienting loops provide a cinematic backdrop for woods’ dense, non-linear lyricism. His verses explore complex themes of colonialism, history, and the Black diaspora with visceral, allusive storytelling that creates a deeply layered and symbiotic album.
