Originally conceived by Brian Eno, his brother Roger Eno, and Daniel Lanois as the score for a documentary on the Apollo space missions, 'Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks' sought to capture the awe and strangeness of space travel. The album distinctively merges dark, textural synthesizer pieces with what Eno termed "zero gravity country and western," featuring Lanois's prominent pedal steel guitar to evoke a pioneering, frontier-like emptiness.
