Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded during his brief but vital period leading a quintet with his brother Nat, the prodigious alto saxophonist delivers a remarkably effervescent, heavily blues-drenched session. The arrangements flawlessly balance intricate, high-velocity bebop technicality with highly accessible, deeply swinging melodies that heavily foreshadowed the impending soul-jazz movement. The recording firmly established him as a massive, immensely joyful force within the fiercely competitive New York jazz scene.
