Album Notes & Community Reviews
Collaborating with the highly inventive composer and arranger William Fischer, the soul-jazz alto titan pushed his quintet into deeply ambitious, avant-garde orchestral territory.[cite: 1] The recording juxtaposes his ensemble's typically earthy, bluesy improvisations against massive, swirling string sections and sudden, dissonant brass interpolations.[cite: 1] It remains a challenging, monumental high-water mark of late-sixties third stream experimentation.[cite: 1]
