Written and recorded while vocalist Phil McSorley was on active military duty in Iraq, this album brilliantly infuses traditional black metal with the muscular, swinging rhythms of sludge and hardcore. The lyrics heavily draw from American literature, specifically honoring Ernest Hemingway and Hunter S. Thompson, matching the music's brutal, primitive intensity. It is widely considered a monumental achievement in the development of American black metal.
