The Riddle

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Taking a brief detour from his renowned time-signature experiments, the pianist features clarinetist Bill Smith alongside his iconic rhythm section. The album focuses heavily on lyrical, classical-adjacent melodies that highlight the group's capacity for delicate counterpoint and profound dynamic restraint. The unique substitution of clarinet for alto saxophone provides a fascinating, highly intellectualized variation of their signature sound.
