The first album in a four-part conceptual series, this record marks Townsend's return to music following a self-imposed hiatus and newfound sobriety. Deliberately avoiding the maximalist extreme metal of his past, the music focuses on restrained, tension-building progressive rock with clean guitar tones and jazz-inflected drumming. It introduced a highly mature, remarkably patient era of songwriting for the prolific Canadian musician.
