½ Mensch cover art

Einstürzende Neubauten’s 1985 album *½ Mensch* marks a pivotal evolution, refining their industrial-noise assault into a work of harrowing, ritualistic theater. The production balances brutalist percussion—forged from scrap metal and power tools—with stark, atmospheric spaces. Blixa Bargeld’s vocals shift from guttural shrieks to the iconic, polyphonic chant of the title track, exploring themes of corporeal existence and the fractured self. Its conceptual depth was further realized in Sōgo Ishii's accompanying film, which visually fused the band’s performance with the visceral movements of Japanese Butoh dancers, cementing its status as a landmark of post-industrial art.
