Somnium Obmutum

The Austrian project debuted with an incredibly ambitious, sweeping synthesis of gothic doom metal and traditional medieval folk orchestration. Comprised essentially of two massive, sprawling suites alongside two short interludes, the recording heavily utilizes lutes, flutes, and soaring female vocals to create a deeply sorrowful atmosphere. The highly atmospheric, cinematic release became an enduring, cherished classic of the mid-90s symphonic metal movement.
