Led by Ian Read, the British neofolk project explores archaic European paganism and traditional English folklore through highly traditional instrumentation. 'Birdking' avoids the martial, industrial influences common to the subgenre, relying instead on delicate acoustic guitar picking, hand drums, and Read's deep, resonant vocal chanting. The deeply melancholic album cemented the group's reputation within the esoteric neo-medieval movement.
