Stripping away some of the intense baroque extravagance of earlier releases, Florence Welch embraces a muscular, brass-heavy rock sound without sacrificing her grand theatricality. Heavily exploring a tumultuous romantic fallout and a period of personal instability, the lyricism is more grounded, vulnerable, and direct. The record was highly praised for focusing its immense energy into tight, emotionally devastating pop-rock structures.
