Operating heavily against the bombast of the late-90s Britpop hangover, the London quartet's debut album is a masterclass in hyper-literate, deeply sarcastic indie pop. Darren Hayman's trembling, highly intimate vocal delivery tackles tales of religious guilt and miserable urban romance over jagged, minimally produced acoustic guitar lines.
