Death Certificate

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Ice Cube's 'Death Certificate' is a conceptually ambitious work divided into two thematic halves: 'The Death Side,' a grim reflection on the state of Black America, and 'The Life Side,' a vision for a better future. The album’s production, primarily handled by Sir Jinx and DJ Pooh, departs from East Coast influences and grounds the record in a West Coast sound, rich with samples from 70s funk and soul. Ice Cube’s acerbic lyricism confronts systemic racism, economic inequality, and intra-community conflict, gaining notoriety for the scathing N.W.A. diss 'No Vaseline' and the controversial 'Black Korea', solidifying the album as a polarizing and commercially successful landmark of political hip hop.
