Destination... Out!

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Building on the modal explorations of his previous work, 'Destination... Out!' documents Jackie McLean's decisive turn toward the avant-garde by pioneering an 'inside-outside' methodology. The album's central thesis rests on the tension between structured, blues-inflected compositions and harmonically free improvisation, a concept amplified by the unconventional frontline of alto sax, Grachan Moncur III's trombone, and Bobby Hutcherson's vibraphone. This unique instrumentation, combined with a rhythm section led by Roy Haynes, creates a sound palette that is simultaneously spacious and intense, cementing the album's status as a key text in the evolution of post-bop.
