Jackie McLean

An alto saxophonist with a searing, sharp, and urgent tone, Jackie McLean was a pivotal figure bridging hard bop and the avant-garde. Mentored by neighbors like *Bud Powell* and *Charlie Parker*, he made his mark early, playing on *Miles Davis*'s album 'Dig' at age 20. His prolific tenure as a leader for #Blue Note# Records in the 1960s produced landmark albums like 'Let Freedom Ring' and 'Destination… Out!', which showcased his 'inside-outside' approach, pushing harmonic boundaries while staying rooted in the blues. Later in life, McLean became a distinguished educator, founding the jazz department at The Hartt School.
