Recorded in the devastating wake of his wife's tragic suicide, this beautifully orchestrated record is steeped in themes of grief, disillusionment, and the loss of youthful idealism. Under the dense production of Jon Landau, the singer-songwriter broadened his folk-rock sound into something more polished and cinematic. The haunting title track became a defining anthem for the fading hopes of the 1960s generation.
